My granddaughter saw this and was so excited! This afternoon she told me she was going to be a famous college wrestler someday. She is in third grade, but plans to be a Hawkeye! She is so excited to be a wrestler in this time in history.

What will it take for Women’s Wrestling programs to thrive?

A humble man who has worked for the last ten years helping girls’ wrestling thrive in Central Iowa recently posted about what it will take for successful women’s wrestling programs to progress. He is so right I had to share my thoughts.

Lately it seems everyone is so busy. Families are pulled a million different ways, practice for this and that, dance, appointments, church, events, homework…. Who will step up to run girls’ practices? Will the girls and boys practice together? When will a girls’ team need their own coach? Will districts fund travel for high school teams? Are there enough bus drivers? Enough coaches? What about practice spaces? There are only so many hours in the day to make time to share spaces. These questions and more are perhaps that’s why sanctioning is taking so long in some areas.

What it will truly take for women’s wrestling to move ahead is the dedication of a few mighty believers and the commitment of schools, both high schools and colleges, to put their money on the line and fund the changes that will be coming. It is a big step and really something to consider.
